New Zealand Road Trip Route

Our two month campervan road trip of New Zealand is over and we had a great time. The New Zealand road trip route took us from Tauranga, North Island to Fiordland in the South and back. We drove over 6200km and saw countless beautiful sights.

Planning Our New Zealand Road Trip Route

Small as New Zealand is – equivalent to Colorado – there’s a lot to see and do. Before we hopped in the van, we didn’t have much of a plan besides seeing as much as we could. We bookmarked Lonely Planet, read people’s blogs, and used Google Maps to decide where to go and what to do.

Once we started driving, we only knew where we were going next. Then, as the days progressed, we booked two things weeks in advance: the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, and the Kaikoura Coastal Walk. Everything else we booked a day or two in advance or last minute.

And Sometimes We Relax: Ojo de Agua, Ometepe Islands

I know this blog is called Mel On the Go, and I usually am pretty active trying new things or repeating activities I love in new places, but sometimes I need a break. And Lyna is on vacation, so we opted for a chill day and found it easy to relax at Ojo de Agua!

how to relax in the ometepes

The Ometepe Islands is a good spot for a relaxing day. While I couldn’t find any spas, the lakefront here is similar to an ocean, with sandy beaches and waves lapping onto the shore. It’s lovely and calming. And the water temperature is perfect!

Wednesday’s epic hike made us tired and sore, so we kicked back and took the day at a leisurely pace and enjoyed ourselves.

Our yummy lakeshore breakfast involved watching the waves and the horses walking through them outside our hotel. $3.50 for breakfast at our hotel fueled us for the day. After eating, we debated a dip in the lake or just a chill in the hammock. We had a very limited agenda.

Things to Do in San Juan del Sur: Pools with a View at Pelican Eyes Resort

I have found an alternative to taking a bus to the beach on a weekday afternoon in San Juan del Sur. It involves walking up the hill from town to lounge in the pools at Pelican Eyes Resort. I went to the resort twice to enjoy the pools and the view. While uphill, I personally don’t think it’s that bad a walk, but you can also get a taxi to take you – it can’t cost much. However you get there, you will enjoy relaxing for the day at Pelican Eyes Resort.

How I found pelican eyes resort

The first time I visited Pelican Eyes was to drop off the school supplies for Pack for A Purpose. This hotel serves as the drop-off point for the Jean Brugger Foundation, even if most of the employees at the reception area don’t know it!
