Street Art in New Zealand’s North Island

We love street art, and after travelling around New Zealand for months, by boat and campervan, enjoyed the varied street art in New Zealand. I found the best street art in New Zealand’s North Island.

Some cities are infinitely better than others for street art. It seems like you need a confluence of artists and unused building and enlightened sponsors. Like other places with excellent street art, many of the best towns for street art in New Zealand’s North Island host festivals devoted to the craft.

Street Art in New Zealand’s North Island: Subjects

The subjects of street art in New Zealand run the gamut, as they do in most places with good outdoor art. Here they range from beautiful fantasy women to real people to birds and fish to Maori mythology. Themes and subjects which are important to the culture get repeated more often.

Street Art in Bonaire

I love exploring places through the street art. It’s cool to see the local talent and what they choose to depict in their murals. I noticed the street art as soon as we could wander the island. Not surprisingly, in Bonaire, the artists paint a lot of marine life. Read on to see and learn about the street art in Bonaire.

The Sea

In Bonaire, locals and tourists celebrate the wonders of the sea and the fun activities to enjoy on and in it. Not surprisingly, that appreciation is reflected in the island’s street art.

Donkeys

Donkeys roam freely around Bonaire so it’s no surprise to see art devoted to these sweet and ubiquitous animals.

Martinique Street Art

A French island, Martinique exudes style. With modern cities and beautifully dressed residents, it’s no wonder the art is impressive. Walking around the different towns, I photographed some of the Martinique street art. I don’t know much about the murals, but I know I like what I see!

Fort de France Street Art

The biggest town in Martinique, the capital city also has the most public art I’ve seen in the Caribbean. I’ve done some earlier posts about street art but this is the first this year.

We spent a weekend in Fort de France to experience the top quality music of Martinique Jazz Festival and I snapped some photos of the murals in the streets.
